President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has attended a ceremony to mark the supply of drinking water to Goygol.

Modern Azerbaijan has achieved major and rapid progress in the socioeconomic sphere under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev. The country gradually gains recognition also as the author of new achievements. One of the main directions of the economic policy of the state consists in the careful attention to the social needs of the population, further improvement of its supply with electricity, gas and drinking water. The projects ongoing in this direction include the reconstruction of water supply and sewage systems in the city Goygol.

President Ilham Aliyev was informed that the construction of a new water line to the city of Goygol was implemented in three phases.

At the first stage, a major complex of hydraulic rainwater, sewage treatment and transmission facilities covering a total area of 15,000 square meters was built for the collection and filtration of surface water in the estuary of the Kurakchay river whose source is located at the foothills of Murovdag. The design capacity of the complex is 132.5 liters per second. The complex of facilities includes infiltration and drainage installations, a rainwater gallery, a checkpoint, a transformer substation and a security zone. To ensure smooth and uninterrupted operation of the facility, high-voltage power lines have been extended from a distance of 5 kilometers using reinforced concrete pylons. To ensure filtration and treatment of the water, 41,000 cubic meters of sand and gravel of various fractions has been collected layer by layer in the system.

The construction of the main trunk line conveying drinking water to the population from the Kurakchay water source has been completed. A trunk line has been built from the complex of rainwater, treatment and transmission facilities to the reservoir.

The President was informed that this line would continuously provide clean drinking water not only to the residents of Goygol, but also the villages of Togan, Chaykand, Yeni Zod, Goychakand, Mikhaylovka, Hajikand and Ashigli. Given the predicted population growth until 2013, the capacity of the plant will enable full and smooth provision of 29,000 people with 72 liters of water per second and 10,000 people of the rural population with 18 liters of water per second.

The second phase of the project envisaged the construction of six reservoirs with a displacement of 1,000 cubic meters each at different altitudes in the city and the installation of a water chlorination unit. Besides, an office building and production facilities with laboratories equipped with modern instruments have been built for the local company "Water canal". All conditions have been created to take prompt action to supply water to consumers. This stage also envisaged the construction of pipelines in the municipal water network, between reservoirs and at junctions between houses. All subscribers are also expected to receive smart-card water meters.

In addition, sewage lines 134,555 linear meters in length have been built in the city sewage system, 1,948 manholes and inspection chambers in the courtyards of 4,500 subscribers and three sewage pump stations constructed. It was noted that the construction of a wastewater treatment plant with a capacity 5,500 cubic meters of wastewater per day and the installation of technological equipment was close to completion as part of the third phase of the project. The complex will be commissioned in the first quarter of this year.
