President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has attended the opening of the Shaki-Gakh section of the reconstructed Shaki-Gakh-Zagatala highway.

Azerbaijan’s road transport infrastructure has undergone fundamental changes in the past 10 years. International thoroughfares passing through the country have been fully renovated to modern standards. Streets and roads of the capital and district centers have been landscaped. According to the orders and instructions of President Ilham Aliyev, the focus now is on the renovation of roads connecting villages and settlements. As in all regions of the country, this process has become widespread in Gakh. The Shaki-Gakh-Zagatala highway is now completely reconstructed.

The head of state reviewed the stands describing the technical and economic parameters of the road.

Transport Minister Ziya Mammadov noted that reconstruction of the road had begun in 2010. The two-lane road is 35 km long and 7 meters wide. The road corridor is 12 meters and the asphalt concrete pavement 8 meters wide. A 26-km section of the road runs through Shaki and a 9-km section through Gakh Districts.

A large bridge has been built over the river Kumruk. The four-span bridge not only provides a comfortable and smooth movement of vehicles and pedestrians to Shaki, Gakh and Zagatala Districts, but is also a beautiful piece of architecture.

High-quality building materials were used in construction. The construction of the bridge began in 2012. The roadway of the bridge is 11.5 meters and the pedestrian section 1.5 meters long. The bridge is located 8 meters above the river. The bridge has reduced the distance to many settlements of the district and made it comfortable, which is further evidence of the improvement to the road and transport infrastructure in the country, in particular the consistent and sustainable attention of the head of state to the socioeconomic development of regions. Overall, there are 21 bridges along the road.

It was indicated that the Shaki-Gakh road is one of the popular travel routes in the country. The road connects the town of Shaki by a bridge over the river Kish in the direction of Gakh to a 14-km Goragan-Gakh-Zagatala road. The road will improve transport links between the towns of Shaki and Gakh and reduce the current distance from 77 to 42 km. The road links 21 settlements of Shaki District with a population of over 28,000 people and six villages of Gakh District with a population of more than 2,000 people.

President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev cut the ribbon symbolizing the opening of the road.

The head of state expressed his satisfaction with the work done and gave further instructions and recommendations.
