President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has attended the commissioning a complex of water supply and sewage supply systems in Gakh city.

The head of state reviewed the stands reflecting the general plan of the water system of Gakh city and images of water reservoir No. 1.

Informing the President about the project on the reconstruction of water supply and sewage systems of Gakh city, the chairman of the "Azersu" Open Joint Stock Company, Gorkhmaz Huseynov, said that the foundation of the complex was laid in a ceremony attended by President Ilham Aliyev on 17 November 2011.

It was noted that the water supply system of Gakh had been created in the late 1960s. Prior to the implementation of the new project, local residents used the water from the Kurmuk and Gumchay rivers, as well as artesian wells. Due to the fact that the existing 25-km water main and 52-km distribution lines were no longer serviceable, there were interruptions in water supply of the population. Of 13,000 people living in Gakh, 9,000 received water on a scheduled basis four to six hours a day. In places where there was no centralized water supply, the population had to meet its needs on an individual basis.

Under the project, the water flows into Gakh city from sources near the village of Ilisu and is supplied to the population through the new and existing networks. As a result, the city is supplied with water from a new source by 100 percent. In order to collect spring water, a rainwater installation with a capacity of 80 liters per second has been built in the area. A 6.7-km water main has been laid from here to Gakh city. To provide Gakh city with continuous drinking water, six reservoirs with a capacity of 1,000 cubic meters each have been built as well. Work has been completed on a 90-km stretch of the 119-km local water network under construction, and more than 2,000 households have been connected to it. To ensure accurate account of the use of drinking water, the installation of "smart card" counters is ongoing, as 1,500 of 5,900 counters have already been installed.

It was indicated that prior to the implementation of the new project there was no sewage network in Gakh at all.

According to the project, a sewage system is being put in place in Gakh for the first time. For this purpose, a 17-km sewage collector has been built. Work has already been finished on a 35-km stretch of the 89.5-km of sewerage network. Wastewater will be sent into the treatment plant with a capacity of 8,000 cubic meters per day, which will be built on the outskirts of the city.

It was noted that the project on the reconstruction of water supply and sewage systems of Gakh has been designed on the basis of development prospects until 2024 and is expected to improve water supply and sewage systems for 14,000 people in Gakh city. It will provide drinking water to 7,500 people in the villages of Gakhbash and Gakhingiloy.

The head of state launched the installation to supply drinking water to Gakh city.

Then, President Ilham Aliyev met with the staff of "Azersu" OJSC and construction workers.

In conclusion, a photo was taken as a souvenir.
